A Last Goodbye: Reflections on a Day in My Life

A day of my life.

I took him to the airport, pulled up to the curb, we were late. I quickly jumped out of the car to give him a hug goodbye and try to help him with his suitcase, to which, he got irritated with me for.

I always thought if I helped him more, maybe he would hurt less. I didn’t think about how it might have made him feel as a man.

Never was my intention.

He grabbed the suitcase before I could and as he stepped up onto the curb I could see him slide his phone into the back pocket of his baggy jeans.

I remember thinking he would lose his phone before he got thru the doors from those and his baggy jeans that were just barely hanging on.

He was six foot two, but he didn’t maybe weigh 175 pounds. The pain had just caused everything to just seem to disappear from all of him.

From all of us….

He put his dark shades on and then gave me a quick “I need to hurry up” kind of hug as he turned away into the double doors where he disappeared from my sight.

I thought I would see him again. I really did.

God somehow always seemed to protect me from imagining or being worried that something wouldn’t happen. It didn’t mean that it didn’t, but at the time, that just seems to be where he put me and kept me.

But it was a day in my life. I just didn’t know it was the last day that I would ever see him in my life.
